i'm gonna make this up as i go along. i'm tired, getting sick, and don't feel like thinking.
Brian walked through the woods. He tried looking up at the sky to get an idea of the time of day, but the branches were thick with leaves and the sky was cloudy. It had been like that all day. As he walked, Brian kicked a small, brown rock that lay off the dirt path. It tumbled forward in front of him and landed in a puddle of muddy water. He paused for a moment to look at the ripples in the water when he felt a drop of rain fall on his head. He looked around and saw a few more drops falling from the hidden clouds. the sound of the droplets hitting the leaves and branches made a peaceful kind of music and Brian closed his eyes to enjoy it.
"I see you," a voice whispered.
Brian opened his eyes and looked around nervously. He had been walking for days. There's no way he could have been followed for all this time. He tried peering through the trees, but the thickness of woods and the limited sunlight made it difficult to see anything that might be far away.
"I see you," the voice whispered again, this time closer to where Brian stood.
Without hesitating, Brian turned and ran down the path. The rain began to fall harder and harder. He tried to ignore it and just keep running. His lungs and legs burned as he was exausted long before he began his sprint. Not paying attention to the ground due to his exhaustion, Brian steps into a small hole in the ground. His foot catches and he begins on a slow tumble to the ground. After several twists and rolls, he lands on his back breathing heavily with his clothes now covered in a thin layer of mud. He looks up at the non-existent sky.
Suddenly, a figure steps in front of him. Brian slowly tilts his head upward and looks at the man in front of him. Brian looks at himself. Only the man standing in front of him is dirtier with unruly hair and old, torn clothes. This man looks down and smiles at Brian. It was a trap, Brian realizes in his head. He led me right into these woods. I've been in his world. The rules are his own.
As Brian finishes his thought, a bolt of lightining streaks down from above the trees and hits him in the chest. Brian's heart stops almost instantly, his eyes wide open. As the other Brian turns to walk away, wolves emerge from the trees and drag the lifeless body off into the darkness.
Michael wakes up in his apartment. His eyes open, but he is not startled. In his head, he hears the same dark suggestions that he's heard his whole life. A low, whispering voice that mutters short commands to him. Michael takes a deep breath and waits for the other voice, the one of reason, to ease him. Instead of hearing the one voice that has kept him sane his whole life, he hears the same whispering grumble.
"Kill her," the voice says.
Michael turns his head to look at his sleeping wife. He sits up straight and picks his pillow up off the mattress. As a tear runs down his cheek, he places the pillow over the young woman's face.
