I went to the circus this weekend for the first time in... um, i don't know, since i was about 5 years old? I don't think Cirque du Soleil counts; this was the full-scale crazy clowns, dancing girls, elephant parade, man-on-the-flying-trapeze, lion-tamer's-head-in-lion's-mouth, tightrope-walking Greatest Show on Earth. It's a bit of an overpromise, but I can see how it may have been true a hundred years ago, when there was really nothing else around. I imagine seeing the circus train pulling into town when your main source of entertainment was watching corn grow or throwing rocks at drunks was pretty impressive.
