last night my housemate's little brother tried to kill himself again. this time he drank antifreeze. 50 units is toxic to a human being. the highest dose the icu doctor had ever handled was 350 units. matthew had 430 units inside him.
he's currently on dialysis, bicarb, and god knows what else. i was in the waiting room with my housemate and her mother and some family friends all night; we drove 2 1/2 hours to get there, and i just got home. the er doctors worked fast and efficiently - he's alive, and he'll most likely stay that way. but the methanol, etc in the antifreeze binds calcium. among other things, and that can lead to severe neurological damage. all we know right now is that he can squeeze a hand if asked. and so we play the waiting game.
