I finished my first day of work at the new job today. It wasn't as scary as I thought it would be and, all said and done, I have a reasonable amount of space to work. My cubically-contained mind continues to wish there were some physical barriers defining my space but the people seem cool and that is the most important thing to me.

I guess that means I'll finally be able to sleep better, maybe? Getting up at 3 or 4 in the morning and then spending the next 5 hours in bed awake gets old pretty quickly.

Conveniently this job apparantly is willing to let me get away for choir tour. Once again I had pretty much written it off until I heard there were going to be auditions for the bass part. After having blown the audition for the jazz band 6 or so years ago I hadn't auditioned for anything so I was a bit nervous... a nervousness that I felt was justified given that I screwed up at least 3 notes and don't like how I handled the transition between pieces.

Imagine my surprise when, well into my second "at least you tried" drink at the bar after the audition I am informed that I got the part. I'm not sure if it is a "good for me" or "what did the other guy do wrong" situation but either way...

I am excited I get to play bass somewhere other than in my basement. This is especially true given that I resigned myself to paying 600 dollars to repair my upright yesterday.

Know what tops a 3ft crack in a rather expensive instrument? A crack starting below the F hole on the other side to match it.

Know what beats 600 dollars for a repair? Having the elderly repair guy give you a startled "wtf" look when he finds out how much the shoddily made instrument he's repairing cost initially.

At least now that I am playing in public again I can consider it something other than just a sunk cost.
