tomorrow, i'm having an entire class of student discussions. one group might talk about homosexuality. i can't wait. the last time i did group discussions, one guy told me that koreans and non-koreans shouldn't date because then they might have ugly children because white people have big noses and round eyes. actually, i have a smaller nose than he did, and a much smaller head. but i didn't bring it up. i'm sure he knew. and, disturbingly enough a number of women in this country ( thousands) get eye operations to create folds in their eyelids ( round eyes). weird. [ it's not that xenophobia, or vague racism out here surprises me. it's a fairly closed society. it's understandable. what is bizarre and unacceptable to me is the inappropriateness of many of the conversations i have with students. someone that i am GRADING tells me that people like me are ugly ( this is one of the less offensive things)? use a little common sense! ] i think one group is just going to grill me on my nose ring. or maybe it's just that i blatantly picked my nose in front of the class, and then they all snickered. today's lesson was on "excuses". i tried to explain to them that " teacher,i was drunk" is not a good excuse for missing homework, or class, or a final exam, or work.
