Hello, SG Community. I'm Andrew. At first, the only thing I had written was "Hello, SG Community. I'm Andrew." Then I realized that this would be my inaugural post, and if that was the only thing I had written, I would need to hang my head in shame. So, without further ado....
I was a member of the SG community several years ago, back in my undergrad days, but I had allowed my membership to lapse. I opened up my email today to find that somebody had bestowed upon me a three-month membership as a gift. I was touched. I don't receive gifts very often, least of all from strangers, and it felt really nice to know that someone was thinking of me and thought that this might make me happy. I'm not sure it has made me happy, but it has definitely made me happier.
As far as I can tell, I'm the squarest person on SG. I have no tattoos or piercings. I don't dye my hair, for the simple fact that I have no hair to dye. I don't go to shows and I don't listen to punk or hardcore, or whatever the hell it's called by the kids these days. Fact is, I don't even like loud noises. In short, I don't fit the stereotype of how an SG member should look or sound, and I like it that way. It takes all kinds.
I attend law school, work in the immigration and human rights clinic, and work as a research assistant. I spend the vast majority of my time sitting around, reading and writing. I do not lead the most exciting life. But it is very fulfilling. I've had an opportunity to help quite a few people working at the clinic, in addition to learning the ins and outs of practice in the immigration field. Being a research assistant...it's not the greatest job in the world, but it's definitely not the worst. I've learned about Texas legal history than I ever wanted to know.
So, I'm glad to be back on SG; I'd like to thank whoever it was who gave me this membership for thinking of me and giving me a fantastic gift, and I look forward to meeting new people and hopefully making new friends.
