It's a defense mechanism. He isn't getting what he wants. So, he retaliates against you to make himself feel better. By putting you down, he justifying to himself that he doesn't want to be with you (since you don't want to be with him). It's definitely not right, but that's what I think he is doing. If he really thought those things, he wouldn't have been with you in the first place.
