That and rope burn is essentially friction and speed. I don't pull quickly, and rope type changes the friction. Smoother rope gives more burn, rougher rope abrades. The rope in that picture is natural jute fibre baked with mineral oil. I've suspended myself with those, and the bite of the rope means burn is never really an issue.
