my sister has been having a tough year. last august she got laid off from the charitable organization where she worked for several years, and she couldn't understand why.

a few weeks ago she learned that it wasn't her fault at all - it turns out that there was massive embezzling going on, and the auditors required that they lay off the entire accounting department. even though her bosses KNEW she was honest, they let her go anyway, without telling her what was going on.

it turns out that their bookkeeper ripped them off for $300k, another employee got them for $25k, and a third person took an amount they were unable to determine.

then she got a job working for a contractor to the university, and soon learned that there was some sort of financial funny business going on there, too. well, she didn't learn it until she (who had been hired to reorganize their office and accounting systems) made a lot of suggestions to safeguard the systems - and the two directors didn't want any safeguards, so they told her she didn't successfully complete her probationary period and let her go.

two months ago she took a job with an engineering firm through a temp agency, with a contract that, after two months, she would become a permanent employee.

the DAY BEFORE her two months was up, they told her at fifteen minutes to closing time she was no longer needed as they didn't have enough work for her.

she finally figured out that this company had been doing that for a year, as someone told her she was temp number five in that chair - or maybe it was six - they called it the revolving desk... it seems they hired people to catch up the work another employee was supposed to do, an employee who apparently has some ties to the owner and can't be fired. then, when the work is caught up, the get rid of the temp until the next time.

you can't imagine how hard it is for a 47 yr old single woman to find a new career. she, like so much of the world, is one paycheck from homelessness at this point, her car is failing, she desperately needs to go to the dentist and can't even dream of being able to do so.

she has decided to try and make some money on ebay selling vintage jewelry, and put up her first items yesterday.

she hasn't gotten many bids, and the stuff she has is pretty cool. please bid on iscag's jewelry auctions if you have a couple extra bucks and a liking for old jewelry.
