Well, the rain is FINALLY beginning to slack off. Good news, since we were well into our third straight day of Hurricane Frances-related downpours. As you might imagine, between Bonnie, Charley, Gaston, and now Frances, things have been a little...damp around here. The grass has turned into a spongy, squishy adventure to walk across, the sidewalks have turned dangerously slick, the normally-benign little creek that runs by University Commons here has turned into a swift-flowing, angry-looking brown-water river which is trying to wash away every tree along its bank, and between the flood watches, wind advisories, tornado watches, and severe thunderstorm warnings, we've all gone just a little bit stir crazy...
Last night between about 11 and 1 is a prime example. Driven to the brink of insanity by the weather, I, along with various members of Pi Kappa Phi and Phi Mu, abandoned all semblances of good judgment and rational thought and went out to play...in the rain. We played in the aforementioned creek (until a USC-Upstate public safety officer came by and told us not to); we competed to see who could complete the longest baseball slide in the grass; we played full-contact hide-and-go-seek; we stripped down to our drawers and ran soaking wet through Palmetto House; and in general we just made complete asses of ourselves. It was cold, it was wet, it was dirty....and it was damn fun!
Today, of course, I'm paying for it. In addition to the expected assortment of cuts and bruises, my oft-injured right knee has been complaining to me all day. I also wound up with ant bites in some rather embarrassing places--apparently I slid through a flooded-out ant bed at some point during the evening's proceedings. But was it worth it?
Oh, hell yes.
My mom, on the other hand, didn't have nearly as much fun as I did. Yesterday she slipped and fell down eight steps in front of a friend's house. Which for most of us wouldn't be that big a deal, but my mom is 71 years old. She wound up with a fractured left arm and broken nose. The doctors assured us that she'll be all right; the injuries weren't nearly as serious as they could have been, and she should only be out of commission for three to four weeks. Nevertheless, as fragile as my mom has proven to be the last few years, any incident like this can be pretty scary.
Well, I probably should go do homework or something. Keep in touch and stay tuned!

Heh, I guess we in Cali here are lucky. The only things we've gotten from the storms, is abnormally warm, (nice) weather. I can't complain.
I'll be sending good thoughts for you and your mom.
