At 5 this morning I awoke to the sound of a boulder falling onto my house. A double concussive thud. Or maybe a meteorite landed in my back yard. Or perhaps those terrorists had struck again.
I sprang out of bed, put on my shoes, and went outside to inspect the damage. But there was no smouldering wreckage. No crater impact. No sirens. Not even a demolished living room. I went back inside, a little disappointed.
From the LA Times: Discovery flew north of Los Angeles between Oxnard and Ventura, NASA said. That meant some Los Angeles area residents heard successive sonic booms rattling their windows as the craft traveled faster than the speed of sound. The first boom sounded like a low roar, distant but very loud. It was strong enough to wake some sleepers NASA gave the official landing time as 5:11:22 a.m. PDT
