spent the weekend in round rock. went swimming once, watched some tv, played some spades and rummy. another weekend down.
hope somebody did some kind of flyers for the show, as lack of funds has prevented me. while satisfying, this will not be attempted again until i'm back east. too hard with no direct connects. hope it works out well. also hope paintedbat made her...

Help with my theology books? How so?
no other news today other than a great im conversation with paintedbat. so without further ado, here's you daily quote from old friedrich wilhem:
The Wanderer. He who has come only in part to a freedom of reason cannot feel on earth otherwise than as a wandererthough not as a traveler towards a final goal: for this does not exist. But he does want to...

spent far too much time alone today. depsite my best efforts, i realize i still need other people. unfortunately, due to poor character judgement, i still manage to surround myself with pieces of shit (usually).
soon, very soon, it will all be fixed.

Hehehe...I laughed at my sister once for going to A&F. Well, not the fact that she went there, but that she paid like $70 for a "worn" sweatshirt. It's totally bullshit that wrinkled and worn shit is in. I like to try on clothes and then throw them on the floor, because they're not matching my mood or something, and then they get wrinkled. I remember that it used to be called "scrubby" if I did that. Oh well. I used to be cool. Now I am cool. And that's just plain sad.
And don't worry. I am smiling.

somedays...i realize i will never have or be what i want to be.

let's see, had the company picnic today. played some hacky sack (no, i do not reek of patchouli or listen to shitty hippy music, we were just bored). not much else actually. a long day, but a completely unproductive one. oh well.
here's your nietzsche for the day:

Thanks for your concern mate. The Doc is now saying it MIGHT be severe ligament damage and he said something about an operation to reconstruct the ankle ligaments. I sure hope he is over estimating this, otherwise my current career will be a short one. I really don't see why THEY would want to keep me on as "damaged goods."
gonna start with the quote tonight.
--Let us look each other in the face. We are Hyperboreans--we know well enough how remote our place is. "Neither by land nor by water will you find the road to the Hyperboreans": even Pindar1,in his day, knew that much about us. Beyond the North, beyond the ice, beyond death--our life, our happiness...We have discovered that happiness; we know...

decided last night, when i get money next, i'm getting geist tattooed on the inside of my lip. figured since i'm gonna do the whole name change thing when i get out of the army, it's ok. it'll also mean a tattoo on on the major parts of my body (head, back chest, arms and legs), which'll be kinda sweet. still wish i'd be able...

Do not worry about what you "look like". I know what you meant...

I'm not serving in the military. Not because I won't, but because I can't -- I had a medical condition surface at the end of red phase in boot and ended up discharged, in surgery and recovering for weeks. (If I had known about it before MEPS I wouldn't have even gotten in.) My family has a strong history of military service, including combat tours, and my circle of friends isn't bereft of veterans, from Vietnam and Korea to Iraq. I didn't enlist for a soft job -- I went in for NBC training and would probably have been in Iraq at least once if I had been able to stay in.
Which I wish I could have done. I had planned to go career, and those events forced me to restructure my entire life. I still help out in the ways that I can in my community -- including getting involved in situations like those involving domestic violence, something that has resulted in threats, slander and, in one case, an attempt on my life. I put my neck out even as a civilian, to make things better for the people around me.
I understand your sentiment; civilians often just don't get what it's like to be in the military and to live a soldier's life. And personally, I find it most offensive to hear comments from hawks who are fit to serve but won't enlist... sending people like my uncles and friends to risk their lives when they won't put their own on the line. But that said, I think that you may have allowed yourself to be poisoned by the more vocal, "I'm going to tell you how to do your job" segment of the civilian population. A lot of us -- those, like me, who can't serve, and those who find that we are able to contribute in other ways -- don't want to take control of the military. However, we do want to make sure that our soldiers are effective, well-cared-for, well-trained and well-armed, and sent to fight only for justified causes.
My father was a firefighter. Every time the Plectron went off as a kid I knew that he might not come back. I know that he had a disdain for people who wanted to muck about in how the firefighters, EMTs, etc. did their jobs when they didn't know fuck-all about it. But I also know that he never lost sight of the fact that, as a firefighter, it was his job to serve -- and that he signed up knowing that full well.
Being retired now I think that he still has a vital role in affecting, as a civilian, how firefighters are trained and equipped, and how the fire stations are run. He's been there -- and he knows more about the job than any rookie who just got on the crew. That carries a lot of weight and, IMO, should be respected even though he's no longer rescuing kids from burning houses.
Some civilians are stuffed-shirt, pontificating assholes, sure. As far as I'm concerned, it's a moral imperative to blow them off and shove their noses in their own shit. But it's a mistake to think that all -- or even most -- civilians are that way, and an even graver mistake to say that the words of people who have served don't carry the same weight as those of people who are serving. That only spits in the faces of the people who came before you.
Feel free to disregard or delete this as you will; I'm a civilian, after all, even if I'm not one by choice. I gave a lot of thought to whether or not to post this, though, and eventually came to the conclusion that it had to be said.
Best of luck to you.

We may be on opposite sides of the planet, but it is good to hear we go through the same things - Yes, I too am an active serving member of the Australian Army. I find it hard to talk to most of my Civillian friends about military life. They just don't understand and probably never will. We too have the same anti/pro Bush sentiments here. Hang in there and hold fast to the mates you have made - I find them to be the best friends I have ever had. Although I am proud to be an Australian Soldier, I too am not a lifer but am honored to be serving for my country.
