I just got an idea for a murder myster novel. Basically there would be no evidence whasoever and the killer is about to get let off when the young plucky prosocution lawyer discovers something new. The alibi is that the guy was at home online talking to his friend (his friend backs up this claim) but they find another person that was sent an IM that night but never responded (because he wasn't home) and left the initial window open. He now has a log of when the defendant logged off and onto his computer. It shows a window just big enough for him to have left his house and commit the crime and occus right when the time of death is approximated. While not enough on its own to prove his guilt, it makes him look nervous enough that the judge reconsiders the other evidence.
