As a young girl, I always wanted to visit the zoo. It was just beyond the river, tucked in a city that seemed larger than any universe my young mind could construct. I remember hearing that at any moment the lions could leap from their cages, charge the gates, and flee into the city. They'd be lost in that universe, stealing the pink flamingos from nearby yards and building their caves from overturned dumpsters.

And in my young and whimsical thoughts, I would have been their only friend.
