if the "check engine" light came on, it doesn't mean that there is something unsafe with it, that particular light is for the environmental/emmisions system. It usually deals with parts like the oxygen sensor, the fuel tank, the evaporative emission canister vent solenoid, the fuel tank pressure sensor, the fuel pipes and hoses, the vapor lines, the fuel cap, the evaporative emission canister, the purge lines, the purge valve solenoid, the catylitic converter.. to name a few.

Depending on what year car you have something as simple as the fuel cap not being on or tight enough will cause the check engine light.

Have you noticed any driveable problems except for the gas mileage per gallon decreasing?
How many miles does the car have? and what year car??
When was the last time and how many miles has it been since the car has had an oil change?
How long and how many miles has it been since the Oxygen sensor, air filter and fuel filter have been changed??
