The ball dropped the last few feet to the ground and slowly rolled across the floor. The col tiles carrying it along the natural slope of the uneven floor. Duncan Flaggin lay on the table and watched it roll away. He sighed heavily and tried to get up, but his arms and legs seemed reluctant to respond.
Great, just great, he said to the air in general.
He watched as the ball came to a stop against the baseboard of the cabinetry and he sighed again, heavier this time.
It wasnt that the ball was especially special. I mean, hed had a set of three of them for most of his life, but the fact that that particular one was the last one, meant it had some significance. In fact, it wasnt so much that that particular ball was special but rather the fact that it was the last one that was special.
What am I going to do now? he said as he tried to pull himself to his feet. Die on the table, that sounds about right.
I think youre being unfair, another voice said. I mean its not like you cant get up. Youre really just choosing not to get up.
