Five-minute fiction - 00:09-00:14
Fireworks burst, dazzling bright, casting back the encroaching darkness. Ragged cheers rose, and the slap-slap of hands on hands trickled through the crowd as they sat staring skyward.
The streets were full, packed to the gutters with the press of bodies. There were a few fights but those were quickly quelled as more and more of the fireworks burst high over head. The roofs were mostly unoccupied. Here and there small terraced balconies were populated by people, some families, others couples caught in the tumultuous waters between lust and awe.
The fireworks were something new, something different. That is not to say that the combining of minerals to produce a desired effect was new, but rather the end result. And of course, there was the fact that it was free. Generally citizens of the City liked to receive things for free. No harm in that.
Grim sat on the edge of the roof, his feet dangling in open air as he lay propped
