This is why I hate people.

In February, the Tribune ran a sweepstakes to help local businesses and increase our ads. My father and a friend of his each donate a one-day, one-person guide trip, which became the grand prize. We clearly stated that the trip is for one person and one person alone. There was also information about booking the trip (e.g. check out the Web site, equipment is included).

A few weeks back the woman who won the grand prize called our office, panicking because she and her husband had taken Easter weekend off from work to go up to Bishop for the guide trips. Problem is they hadn't booked the trips yet. She said she'd called my father repeatedly with no response. So I called him. He told me she'd left a message for him the night before but that was it. He didn't get home until 9 p.m. and didn't think it was important enough to call her that late, but said when he got home that night (at about the same time) he'd call her again. I don't know if he did.

The woman also claimed she called my father's friend and he told her children were not allowed on the trip. She has five, I believe. Now I see both sides of this. From a fishing perspective, children, especially small ones, are noisy and rambunctious and scare away fish (I certainly ruined my fair share of good fishing days), but I also understand the woman wants this to be a family event.

My dad told me she must not have been talking to his friend because he was in San Diego (either at a convention or dealing with his sick mother, not sure which). Dad reassured me he'd call the guy and tell him to book the trip.

I didn't worry about this any more because it seemed like it would be handled. The woman called again today and spoke with me. Basically saying she couldn't ever get ahold of my dad, except once. I don't know what happened during that call because she really didn't elaborate, except to claim he'd never called his friend, which is plausible knowing how forgetful my father is. She sounded disappointed and upset that they took the time off but my feeling is you took the time off before even knowing if you had the trip. You planned this poorly, do not punish someone else for your mistakes. You only left one message on my father's machine. How was he to know this was such an emergency? If you really want something, you work for it, not sit on the sidelines hoping the coach'll throw you into the game.

I know my father can be lazy and not do the things he needs to, but generally he's really good about his guide trips. He was actually really looking forward to this trip, he was even going to write a story about it (yeah he's a writer too).

This woman has pissed me off.

And I'm itchy. I want my bath and aloe. Now.

I was thinking more along the lines of six-shooters and tin stars.
