Driving to work yesterday I passed a cop giving someone in a red toyota a speeding ticket.

Why should someone who does not obey the speed limit be allowed to give someone who does not have the "BankAmericard", a ticket.

Seriously, when is the last time that you saw a cop drive the speed limit? And they are the ones enforcing this little vendetta?

I wonder if any of them know exactly why we have a speed limit. And don't tell me "for safety". Sure, that is a correct answer, but it is too general. Specifically, why do we have a speed limit?

Well, wait no more. Here is the answer.

The speed limit has very little to do with how fast you can safely go. It has everything to do with how quickly you can stop.

Take for example a curvy 25mph road. You can run 45mph with no danger of running off the road. BUT, if you come around a curve doing 45mph and there is a car stopped in your lane, stopped waiting for traffic to clear to make a left turn, you have hit that person.

Now if you were going 25mph, you might just be able to stop.

It's all line of sight. Or as I was told by the gentleman that taught me how to drive "If you can see the road, speed up. If you cannot see the road, slow down."

Makes sense, no? Works for hills, curves, snow, etc.

Further proof: Unlimited speed limit out west where you can see for 40 miles what is in front of you.

And lastly, limited access roads have higher speed limits than similar roads that don't have limited access.
