I have decided to take the disaster aid class through the Red Cross next week, and I could be going to Mississippi or Louisiana the following week to help with the relief/rescue efforts. The class prepares you for "on site" work, and it is required for all volunteers who want to go and help Katrina victims. I'll find out after the class if I will be asked to travel. I hope so. I want to help somehow, and I have no monetary means...but since I was fired from Allstate I have plenty of time to contribute. The people that go down there have to be able to travel for a minimum of three weeks. I don't mind that, but the only thing that would hold me back is if I couldn't find someone to take good care of my sweet doggie Niko while I am gone. I wish I could take her, she would be a great Pet Therapy dog for the children in shelters. That sort of thing can help children get through a traumatic experience like this. Imagine how nice it would feel to one of those children right now to be able to snuggle with a warm, fuzzy friend, get wet kisses, and laugh at goofy dog expressions.

I know someone who went do with a semi-truck to the South for relief efforts. I'm pretty sure he didn't have to do anything extra because he was just helping take supplies down there. The group was called 'God's Pit Crew'. I'm not sure if they're taking another trip down or not. It would be a wonderful thing to do if you could handle it financially. I would be worried about getting down there with no money and then being stranded myself. I'm sure you'll journal if you end up going. Good luck. -dave
