The phone rings.
The camera slowly pulls back on the second ring. Very slowly, but gaining momentum. By the third ring we are about 10 feet away and continuing to pull back. We pull back through a small dark opening - a key hole. We widen into the hallway and reveal several figures at the door. The ringing, now muffled, continues.
EXT. HALLWAY - DAY
We are in the hallway with the figures who come into focus - a mix of uniformed policemen and plainclothes detectives.
One of them steps to the door and knocks firmly.
POLICEMAN #1
This is the police! Open the door!
The phone continues to ring, muted behind the door.
The cop tries knocking one more time and then tries the handle. The door is unlocked and opens. Weapons are drawn and they enter slowly. We follow over their shoulder into the room - officers spread out. We move from room to room past the interior - the phone still ringing.
The officers stand in the bedroom and as we move through and follow them we catch a glimpse of blood pooling on the floor. Closeup on the drips from the edge of the bed, and..
The phone stops ringing.
One of the plainclothes detective walks into the room - the cops move out of the way as he steps up and surveys the situation. We pan up from beside him - just over his shoulder and survey the body - a young woman - early twenties. Red hair. Cynthia.
The camera pulls back revealing the detective who turns around. It is Chris, from the first scene.
CHRIS
..christ.
He turns and storms out of the room. The cops eye each other and one looks quizzically at the other - eyebrows raised.
POLICEMAN #1
He used to live here.
The cops start to survey the scene and take notes while another calls in. The camera rises out of the scene - staring down and surveying the room and we
CUT TO:
EXT. APARTMENT BUILDING - STREETCORNER -DAY
The front door of the apartment building slams open and Chris steps into the street. He stops at the corner and lights up a cigarette. One of the other detectives steps up beside him.
DETECTIVE
A little rough, isnt it? Being so close to home and all. You want me to take care of it? ill call it in. Take the afternoon off.
Chris, still inhaling on his cigarette - nods tersely. The detective turns and walks up the stairs. Chris stands at the corner for a moment longer before turning walking down the street.
We follow him, and as we do we pull slighty out into the street so we are wider on him as he walks along the sidewalk - his stride becomes a bit longer and the street changes slowly, nearly imperceptibly.
His shoes change. Slacks change colour and texture - slowly into jeans - his hairstyle flickers and is slightly different - the coat is changing - less overcoat, not as long - a light black jacket.
the camera pushes back in and chris continues to walk, inhaling on his cigarette. All of this change occurred without the rhythm of his steps breaking - the inhalation and exhalation of the cigarette constantly in time throughout.
He pauses in front of a restaurant - looks up at the address - puts out the cigarette and walks inside.
INT. RESTAURANT - LUNCH HOUR
Its very busy. We see him walk in and speak for a moment with the girl at the front - she points to the back - he looks and moves forward. We follow him through the crowd - catching looks from strangers and capturing moments like snapshots of average people in an average restaurant having an average lunch.
We push in with Chris as he comes up to a table and sits down with Cynthia.
CYNTHIA
Mhmm. I see. just cant shake that 10 minute rule, huh?
Chris smiles and pulls out his chair, takes off his jacket and sits down.
