endless summer.

i have a theory that the reason folks in LA are addicted to youth and are getting implants and tucks and nips and so forth isnt entirely because of the film and television industries and the illusion that they portray. rather it has to do with the weather.

think about it for a second. all of socal is blanketed in sunshine throughout the year - heck this past 10 days has seen temperatures that are comparable to a summers day from where i come from.

[as an aside people down here that wear toques or scarves or parkas in this weather need to be sent to my hometown for a few minutes - it hit **-50** with windchill while i was there - that would teach them a thing or 2 imho]

alright so the weather down here is mild. all year round. i dont see a clear definitive change in the seasons anywhere - do you? no slushy spring no leaves changing on *every* tree and the nights getting nippy as our footsteps crackle on the leaves underfoot - the now naked trees like skeletons against the night sky - no. NONE of that.

snow? do we get a white wonderland blanketing the horizon - trees outlined in white and the sundogs surrounding the sun on those crisp clear winter mornings? no.

what do you think this does to you? i believe that the organism needs to *know* that it is aging. that time is passing. the seasons are a clear and accurate signal that another year has cranked past and its time for a new start - a new rebirth of life as the cycle returns. down here - its still summer. think about it - you graduate from highschool and you tackle the world and its summer. you hit 22 and get into your first long time romance - still summer. your first marriage whatever - summer. you upgrade your profession - summer. you buy your first house- summer. child is born - it still feels like summer. one long fucking summer that never ends. you still feel like you are 19 or 21 or whatever and you dont want the holiday to end, so you fight tooth and nail to avoid the changes..

meanwhile - thousands of miles away people are aging gracefully. time passes and folks seem to understand it - the seasons mark the passage of time - events that you recall occur in sharply defined seasons - graduation- summer, school starting in fall, marriage in the spring, child is born in winter, first bike for kid in fall - the leaves rustling beneath the tires..

you can FEEL the earth getting older and the passage of time - you see it and sense it for it is obvious.

when i went home in january for 5 days it changed me - i felt like another year had clocked past. there was something that i had missed but it was there again - suddenly filling me with the knowledge that the cycle has been restarted.

spring would come soon. and this year i will be 33. i feel comfortable with that.
a year has passed.
the summer has ended.
long live the new summer.

I actually think you're right; all three were created by Canadians. But the answer i was looking for was all three are adopted. I know, it's not that funny, but in my own defense, when I was told the joke I was already in a very good mood and having a great time at dinner, so I may have been a bit biased and an easy target for a lame joke.

As for what happened that was so awesome, I'll tell you later. I don't want to post it here, it will make me look like a pretentious prick, which of course I am, but there's no need for others to know that. ;-)

oh man, be glad you are in the land of plastic surgery and never ending summer. it has been so cold and so gray on the east coast for the past two months, it's hard to even want to go outside. i think you're right about the body needing to realize the passage of time, but this winter has been so out of control it's aged me from 24 to 90.
