mars.
i was going to go to mars, but analogies are better. so a quick one.

we should go to mars because we shouldnt keep all of our eggs in one basket.

thats it. now back to the good stuff.

analogies are fun part 2.

icing.
imagine you like birthday cake. most people do - but you REALLY like birthday cake. from the first time you had some, you wish it was your birthday every single day. i suppose this isnt really a difficult thing to imagine for most people...but you are young, you cant have birthday cake anytime you want.

now think about the cake. the way it gets baked - the time, the preparation - the ingredients. imagine once you learned how cakes were made that you loved to take the time to really make a fantastic cake. it involves some patience - i mean - sure you can go and buy a birthday cake anywhere, but it doesnt have the same flavour - and even if its good- there is something very rewarding about baking it yourself. so you want to take the time - the experience and effort of making a really great cake, and the feeling of elation and of course the reward at the end: the cake itself.

now imagine sitting down and eating that birthday cake, and there isnt any icing. it's just not the same is it? birthday cake just isnt birthday cake without the icing. it's not at all the same. its dry - it might even be bland. in fact, i would very nearly NOT call it birthday cake.
it is something else. something boring. blech.

the interesting thing about icing - when you make it you always want to lick the spoon or the bowl. in fact - that was my favourite thing about birthday cakes - getting to lick the bowl and the mixing utensils afterwards. that followed through once the baking was done- in fact i used to have cake and leave all of the icing until last - because it was the best part.

now imagine you are older. you can have a birthday cake pretty much anytime you fancy it. you dont have to wait - i mean - its not a rare occurence now like it was when you were young. you have lots of friends and definitely the opportunities to have birthday cake on a whim. however, the fact that it isnt the same without icing is maintained. in fact, now that you are older- and some would say wiser - you think that sometimes the icing is all you need.

in fact, when you get the opportunity to have birthday cake you might just spend the whole night savouring the icing and totally forget the cake.

i like analogies, but i *love* icing.

I know, that was an easy one. Um, if 18 is the way it's supposed to be, then I'm generally off the mark by about 18. Oh, you said combined. Well then I guess off by 17 frown.

Got the message! Thanks for the happy science thoughts. I'm closer to Sacramento than SF. I have this nice picture of me in Hollywood in my pics, but I don't have it on this computer, and so I had to get it from lavalife. Terrible quality! I haven't been there in so long, it took me 4 tries to get my password in right smile.

Had your name in my brain as I was falling asleep last night. So tired and a little wacky. Couldn't remember if that was your real name, or if you were a movie character.
