I've worked a lot of jobs in Center City Philadelphia and hung out a lot in the city. You just have to know where to go and where not to go. It's an absolutely beautiful city and the people are (despite the reputation) open and friendly, but definitely have a bit of an attitude.
As far as history, culture, restaurants (something like five of the top ten rated in the US), food, nightlife, and proximity to all kinds of other places (NYC, DC, AC, the Jersey shore, etc.) there aren't very many places that can beat it ... or even come close.
It's home for me, and probably always will be.
GO PHILLIES!
My experience with them is pretty much limited to regional rail ... I took the train into work for years. Very reliable with service ending around midnight. As for buses and subways and shit, I have no friggin' clue.
I have nothing to compare it to, but they never screwed me over too badly.
