Lord of the Nerd's Content Gauntlet - Replacement Question

Bonus: Tell us about something you have created that you love.

I decided that I wanted to share something on the GAUNTLET that I hadn't shared on SG girls previously, so I went with some older woodworking projects I created. I know that I already did the 7 assigned questions, and that the timeline is long since passed on the assignment, but I don't care. Lol.

-

When I was growing up, my father had a somewhat vast empire in my hometown. He had 2 hardware stores, 2 gas stations, 2 concrete plants, apartments, properties, a mechanic's shop, and a bunch of other things. He was known for quality home-building and had teams for everything, from concrete, electrical, plumbing, framing, roofing, etc. If someone wanted a new home, we could go from empty property to moving them in, in 6 weeks.

-

This meant I grew up learning all the ins-and-outs of building and renovating. If pressed, I could probably build a house entirely myself, but I really wouldn't want to. Despite all of the skills I learned, the only one I really loved was woodworking. Something about the feel, the smell, the look... I just love it. But I don't get to do it very often.

-

I was with my ex-wife for nearly 13 years before I finally decided to start putting an earnest effort back into creating some woodworking projects for around the house. It just so happened that I had ended a retail rescue contract and had made a big mistake and lost the next one I was going to do. So, I had some idle time and I decided to tinker. First, I had to get our little garage capable of handling some woodworking, and build some solid work benches. These are photos at the end of it all, just as the divorce started.

-

-

Then I decided I wanted to build some stools for our kitchen. I did some test builds out of some scrap lumber, and once I was satisfied with the design, I built 2 larger ones and 2 smaller ones, out of Cedar. (By the way, if you are doing woodworking and you don't have a Kreg Jig, I highly recommend you get one.) I sanded them smooth and finished them.

-

-

But before I put them in the house, I had an idea for an improvement. Using my 3D printer, I designed and printed some feet for them, complete with recessed screw holes. First, I printed them on cheap, black ABS, then when they were right, I printed them on a whiteish Nylon. That way, they'd help keep the legs from cracking, plus they were the perfect surface to adhere felt pads to, making the stools slide with just a light push.

-

-

And the result is the first picture in this blog. They came out beautifully and suited our house perfectly. As I was building the stools, my ex asked me to build her some decorative planters for around the house. I quickly made one for above our fireplace that looked great.

-

-

I managed to do a few more projects before we divorced. Can you believe that she demanded the stools as part of the divorce settlement? Needless to say, I told her to forget it, because they were mine and she didn't deserve them. Only, I didn't say it quite that nicely.

-

Nowadays, I don't have the ability to get a work shed up and running for myself again, but I would like to. I have a lot of projects I'd like to do around my house in wood, and a few people have requested I build them some things. Maybe one day I will finally get back into again and I'll share more here. Thanks for reading, eh?
