Poem #8 - Your Hero no more

-

Almost 2 months since I last shared a poem. I haven't been in the mood, and then something struck me in my feels and I suddenly had this one out and on paper in minutes. It is hella fresh, the ink hasn't even dried yet. So, pardon if there are spelling or grammar or punctuation errors.

-

This poem is a standard 13/13 A, 13/13 A, 13/13 B, 13/13 B type of pattern. It's sort of a release of my interpretation of a recent break up, and it uses symbolism to represent a much bigger situation. It isn't me being angry or bitter, but just giving one last loving gesture and moving on. I hope you all enjoy it and would love to hear your feedback, whatever it may be. But please be kind.

-

Your Hero no more

-

You step out of the house that you pretend is a home,

suffocated and suffering, unable to breathe.

The rain drenches you and gives you momentary calm.

Your eyes seek shelter. A refuge. An escape. Reprieve.

-

Hoping for one to find you and rescue you from this.

Glow behind you, staring desperate into the night.

You feel my figure across the road, lost in the rain.

Your heart leaps as you see me step into the streetlight.

-

As if I could sense your hungry need with mine matching,

I stop mesmerized and meet your hopeful eyes with mine.

Our connection is deep, instantaneous, and real.

Seduced, before either one could think of our first line.

-

I cross towards you the same time you cross towards me.

You know that I’m the true hero you have been needing.

I know that you are the partner I have been seeking,

the one to help my long open wounds to stop bleeding.

-

We meet in the dark world, trying to see each other.

No words. No hesitation. We lock in an embrace.

Support and comfort, strength from weakness, warmth in the cold.

Then our first kiss, deep enough to make our lost hearts race.

-

And we share this, you and I, two lives finally met.

Our hands are familiar and our bodies reacting.

The fear of change, leaving it behind overcomes you.

Slowly we both feel your confused presence retracting.

-

You’ve been gone long enough from your madhouse to forget

the fear, the abuse, and the acting that you must do.

So, you turn away reluctantly, broken, and scared.

Choosing the hurting familiar over new and true.

-

You break our embrace and turn to walk back to your past,

to the monster and men with uncomforting voices.

Building up rage and hate to leave me and forget me.

Putting on the fake smile to grace your lesser choices.

-

In the dark and the blurring tears, you stumble and fall.

Crying. Alone. Having abandoned my loving arms.

After a lonely moment, my hands slide under you,

I lift you up against me, protection from the harm.

-

One last unrealized dream of yours I must fulfill.

So, breathe me in one last time and remember me near.

I use my last strength to carry you back to your cage.

Take you back to the decorated prison you fear.

-

The last few steps, I give you back your game and your name.

Gentle. Broken, I deliver you to your front door.

Stand you there, with your decision, you turn to look back,

watch me fade away forever. Your hero no more.
