It’s a question I often ask as I strive to be one. So, I thought I would put this out as a question to see how others defined it. It is not intended to be a gender identity attack or division. I just want to know what crosses your mind when you refer to someone as a “good man” or when you hear someone say it?

A good person for me would be someone who is careful with other people's feelings. Who strives to be consistent in his words and deeds. However, this does not mean that a good person should sacrifice himself for the sake of others. In the first place should always be yourself, then your loved ones, then everyone else. It seems to me that a good person is someone who is sincerely honest and tries to explain it, to understand the other, but not to impose their thoughts.

When I hear or use the term “good man,” to me, it conveys the image of someone who strives to do right no matter the cost or consequence, someone who acts with conscience and tries to act with wisdom and kindness. A man who stands up for what he believes in, but has compassion and humanity. A good natured person who seeks to understand. Today, I stopped and held the door for an elderly gentleman. He took over a minute to slowly get there and as he passed by, he said “Thank you. You’re a good man.” To which I replied,” You are too. Have a nice day!” The smile that lit his face was sincere. “That’s how good men treat each other,” I thought.
