Arriving as usual at 7:30 at the Hotel Cafe in Hollywood for the last edition of the Nightwatchman's nights -- aka Rage Against the Machine/Audioslave's axe-man -- I had the great displeasure and surprise to discover 2 huge lines -- one for paying customers and one for the guest list, which was mostly filled with B-celibrities and friends. As you would expect this turned into a disaster with a couple hundreds people not being able to get in, including yours truly.
How did such a confidential event turned into some Hollywood-chic night? I suspect the presence of boredom champion Ben Harper must have leaked somewhere -- press, website? -- as I can guarantee you the hundreds people in line didn't look like Rage, Cypress Hill or Shooter Jennings fans. Fuck Ben Harper's fans who spoiled the night and fuck the second rate celebrities who got in for free, as it was a benefit night -- of course, there is always a way to get on the list, which I could have managed to do weeks ago, but since it was a benefit event, I thought I would give away my $10 and do something useful -- for once.
As for the who's who tonight: Gina Gershon, Fugees, as well as a few second rate TV actors and musicians. The night ended at the cheesy/cool Velvet Cantina on Cahuenga, accross the Street. But the evening wasn't all wasted - at least I was able to see one of my favorite -- weirdo -- filmmakers, John Waters, at some publicity event.
