these are the actions
of divine arbitration
and slimy acts of desparate arm wrestling

lumps and logs
up to the neck in froth
gasping for clean beach towels
eating with a comb
the broken remnants of
yesterday's dreams
cream corn raisin goodbyes
questions we tried to forget
the cold morning wake ups
the hot hungry static
and back alley porchways

reverse this course of action
this lost river of reflection
drown the ways
we stay tethered to decency
loosening the grip on heartbroken sailors
pulling teeth from abandoned warehouse roofs

and pillows
and sand
and hungry
slobbering for affection
