Today; Clashes between protesters and security forces in Tibet's main city of Lhasa have left at least two people dead, according to reports. An emergency official told AFP news agency that many people had been hurt and an unspecified number had died. The US-based Radio Free Asia quoted witnesses who said they had seen at least two bodies on Lhasa's streets. Rallies have continued all week in what are said to be the largest protests against Beijing's rule in 20 years.

I for one am very much taken with the Tibetan people. And the enforced assimilation of their culture, beliefs and the destruction of towns, villages and temples sometimes thousands of years old. Tibet has always captured the West's and my imagination as the site of a mystical Utopia.

(following is taken from from bbc.co.uk)
Geographically dramatic and remote, it has an average altitude of 13,000ft (4,000m) above sea level and is popularly referred to as 'the roof of the world'. It is isolated not only geographically, but also diplomatically. China enforced a long-held claim to Tibet in 1950, and it was subsequently incorporated into Chinese territory.
Tibet's spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, fled to Dharamsala in northern India, where his supporters have set up a government in exile.

For most of the 1990's the U.S called china a MFN- most favored nation. A status awarded by one nation to another in international trade. It means that the receiving nation will be granted all trade advantages - such as low tariffs - that any other nation also receives. This angered a large quantity of people, especially because of the huge human rights issues China has.

Olympics.
China has spoken out against athletes/reporters and visitors who want to use the up and coming Olympics as a platform for speaking out about these human rights, but also others like Tibet and other environmental issues. As if that wasn't enough, Tibet is not permitted to participate in the coming Olympics but some are protesting against this.....
