I do not believe in censorship.
Well seeing as everyone is commenting on the Nana set I'd thought I'd put in my opinion. First off, No I do not think rape is sexy, nor do I think it is ok. BUT I repeat I do not believe in censorship.
People are, can and will be hurt/ disgusted and generally made to think both positively and negatively by many different things, through the parental voice and life's experiences that form us. Among other things It makes us what we are, unique personalities, all carrying our own taboo's, loves, hates idea's and thoughts.
I do not want to live in a society who predicts what I can and can not like, watch or listen to. Art has always pushed the boundaries and has often been used to make people stop and think about who they are, what they feel abd why they like, hate or love that which they do. Art can help manifest ourselves and show us who we are. For art to be censored kinda freaks me out It's the kind of thing Islamic Sharia states do, not the west where we have freedom of speech...something I hold dearly.
Now I am not pro-offending people, quite the opposite. But I don't believe in controlling what people say, sing, dance, do or portray in a painting or SG set either.
I feel people have the choice to be offended and just as importantly, the choice to not be offended. And what is wrong with being offended in the first place? Is it a bad thing to hurt, to feel you still have issues? Do we live in a society where everything has to be perfect? Where we have to be quiet about certain subjects? Hushhh husshhh..... Is there a law against offending, are there rules on what is and is not offensive? I am not talking discrimination here, I am talking being offensive. Wearing a type-o-negative t-shirt, having a skull tattoo, posing naked on the net, can be offensive...does that make it wrong? Now don't be silly, I know rape is bad (putting it mildly), but is a film or song about rape bad? How about films and songs about murder, how many songs do you like or sets do you like or films do YOU LIKE that could be offensive to others, hmmm?
My best friend committed suicide some years ago by hanging. But I loved Pill's suicide set. Did it make me think of Rene? Hell yeah, did it offend me? No! I mean, Pill wasn't aiming to offend me, she was acting out her fantasy, expressing herself in a way she wanted and doing it beautifully, I must say
!
But above all I have control over my feelings and my computer and can choose either not to be offended, to be offended and wonder why and deal with those issues or to just click the "X" in the right hand corner and move on to the next set in oblivion.
I am happy for those offended that the offensive material that hurt them so has been removed. But I can't help wondering if the offense isn't still there, under the surface. Ignoring matters, pushing them under the carpet or just closing our eyes doesn't make them go away. Acceptance, staring fears, hates and taboos in the face, does.
(Believe me, I have my reasons just as well as some of those offended. )
What freaks me out is not the set. But the men who love it. I hope they are wondering why they love it and are aware of the damage real rape causes. It's no joke but definitely art.
A quote from member (danielK) that I completely agree with is:
This whole situation is so full of irony and contradiction that I don't feel like anyone sees it. Many people are offended about the nazi imagery in the set, and it's valid to be offended by that. But one of the terrible things that nazis did was to censor art and artists. They felt completely justified in doing so because they didn't like the art or even see the works as art. They were offended by the distorted figures of the cubists and the expressionists so works of art were banned and burned and artists were killed and imprisoned. So isn't it ironic that some are calling for the censorship of photos with nazi imagery? One of the prices of freedom of expression is that we must sometimes be offended, hurt, enraged or saddened. The alternative is a world of fear, restriction and control.

Nana's set was approved by SG but the masses reacted negatively so it was a censorship by the people. Sorry to everyone who was offended by the Nazi references but I personally didn't think they were very strong or played an important role. Obviously being drugged and raped is not okay but sometimes you can't take these things too seriously. After all, it's just a set which is supposed to be fantasy - not reality! That was her vision and freedom of speech but we took it away. If you can get past the bad parts, the overall tone was beautiful. It's a matter of how you look at it and your interpretation. Can we have art on here too or only porn?
