So a few weeks ago was Chinese New Year--

this year my family celebrated it; because my sister is now engaged to this guy whose whole family is from China --

and so my sister's fiancee has this most adorable 10-year-old cousin, Anne, and it's really cool because I never had a cousin before, and when my sis and Anne's cous get married that'll make us cousins-in-law or twice-removeds or somethings...

so we're having dinner and she starts to notice my hair:
"why do you dye your hair? it's blue, and green, and purple, and black..."

i just answered; "because i like it. i think it's pretty." usually this is enough to explain..

She, however, seemed only more bewildered by this, and did the little kid "o-kaaaay?"

Later, I see one of her other cousins braiding Anne's hair, and I try the trick I sometimes find gets the point across: "so why do you braid your hair?"
she just says "why do you braid yours?"
and i remember that i do have one or two in there... oops

So, starting to feel a little like i was on some kinda sesame street knockoff show, and also feeling like i should maybe just employ the ever-annoying "you'll understand when you're older", i just left it at that, most quizzical conclusion..


what do you say to little kids, when they ask you why you look a funky way?
