Spent a few days with my grandpa at the hospital. He is unable to swallow due to one or more factors. In addition to the stroke, the tests have revealed a protruding disc in his neck which is pressing against his esophogus. This has been causing some problems prior to the stroke and may have contributed to his challenges in walking. A temporary feeding tube will be used to allow time for the stroke damage to heal, about 4 - 6 weeks, then additional tests will be done.
The carotid artery (the main one in the neck) is blocked about 60 - 79%. This may need to be cleaned out or replaced. Either procedure is a common one, but this also will be re-visited in 4 - 6 weeks.
The damage from the stroke appears to be limited to a minor speech impact and the issue with the throat. All other functions, including his onery attitude,
appear to be unaffected.
