i'm in Salt Lake City.
until the severance/retention bonus that will get me 7 months of salary becomes definite, i'm still taking a hard look at job oppoortunities here in SLC, because if i don't get the severance pay, it would be a good idea to stay employed.
but i'm not really keen to move to SLC.
it does have a few things to recommend it, though:
1. incredibly beautiful
2. dry climate that has put an instant stop to my seasonal allergy attack.
3. far more religious diversity than one might have expected--there's a "teachings of buddha" book next to the gideon bible in my hotel room, and a plethora of non-Mormon churches, mosques, and temples. at least in SLC, it looks like everything from atheism to bahai to islam to zen is alive and well.
the hotel i am staying in is too, too charming. it's decorated in a gaily-colored take on 1930s opulence. not over the top, just perfectly calculated to bring to mind the sort of nice hotel you're always seeing in old movies like The Thin Man, only lit up in lurid color.
the company, and the job, however, are not appealing to me. the job is like my current job with all of the interesting/creative aspects bleached out. the company is like a rabbit-warren. practically no one gets an office.
even programmers, for whom peace, quiet, and a lack of interruptions are key to productive work, get only tiny half-height cubes wedged together in very close proximity to each other.
i really do *not* want to work in this place, especially at that job.
going to try to hook up with TheGil this evening and see if i can't get the scoop on SLC from someone who hasn't got a bias toward convincing me to move here.

hi ff! "always look on the bright side of life" *whistle whistle* a little m.p. to throw at ya. i truly hope your life settles soon. slc is a crazy place. the liquor laws alone are enough to make you wonder if they know it's 2002. it is beautiful though-about 6 hours from me. i imagine there's lots of stuff to do there, you may just have to seek it out more (?). hope you can hook up with TheGil. take care!
