I went camping in Ithaca with my sweet girl last weekend.

There were a couple of times when this amplified the stress and irritation levels considerably...but in a way that's actually a good thing. Conflict, once resolved, adds stability. And it led to our spending some quiet hours just reading--the kind of gentle down time that is so nice, but so hard to prioritize when you're on a compressed long-distance schedule.

And overall, we had fun. Lots of hiking of the various gorges and waterfalls around Ithaca, and one quasi-gourmet campfire meal prepared for her brother and his fiancee, with yours truly as chef and Joy as firebuilder.

We made a good team...corn on the cob, salt potatoes, chicken kebabs, beef packet stew, garlic stuffed tomatoes, and roast figs and smores for dessert.

The girl is an excellent firebuilder/tender!

Other than that, we ate out mostly. Ithaca Bakery is divine for breakfast.

Sunday I took engagement pictures for the brother & fiancee. I hope they like them.

I've added a photo of Joy at one of the largest falls in the area. Note the tiny people on the right edge of the photo for scale.

One weird fact about Ithaca--they're a bunch of lawless hoodlums. The wall on which Joy is sitting is clearly labeled with signs and stencil-painted warnings prohibiting any exploring beyond the wall. But as you can see, everyone just ignores them and climbs over. This was observed repeatedly at various swimming holes emblazoned with fluorescent "No Swimming" signs, at hiking trails with "No Access Beyond This Point" barriers, and so on.

So basically, in Ithaca people seem to do as they please. Which is actually rather cool. If it were a wee bit bigger, and closer to a large city, I might consider living there.

Today's her day in NYC small claims court. I hope it goes well. Afterward, she's coming to town for the night and we're baking cookies--no joke!

Snickerdoodles!

After that, well...probably not so wholesome and domestic. biggrin

Question of the day: What's the book you most often re-read? The one you keep going back to again and again, despite the plethora of books out there you haven't read?

-ff

p.s. What's with all the girls who changed their names around here? I'd been wondering what ever happened to O when I came back, and now I finally realize she just became Olivia instead. Who, by the way, has taken some amazing self-portraits. Sunbeams!

p.p.s. What on earth happened to chiquita? Come back, turtle lady!
