You know I hated living in Minnesota when I was there but it's partly because I didn't live in the cities. I miss all the cool culture going on in the cities that I slightly got to experience every once in awhile. First Ave. when they had all ages shows(cause I was 20 at the time) like Jello Biafra a few days before Paul Wellstone died right before the elections, seeing The Melvins with Jucifer, Atom and His Package, Wesley Willis(R.I.P.) and the godly Grand Buffet. Seeing Henry Rollins speak in an awesome tastefully built theatre where later I saw Mr. Show Hooray for America in a similar one. Ruminator Book store, Luna vintage, the clean air, all the great stuff that had I been a year older I could've seen.
Sometimes it gets really lame here in Memphis. The people are really into their groups, not very accepting of new music because they're stuck in time with a lot of old garage music, and they just don't try to make it culturally successful. When bands come through that are pretty cool they either won't go or they'll just stand there with their arms crossed as though they have to strong arm judge everything. That sucks. Plus getting robbed is crappy too.
Oh well, maybe when I'm older I'll go give the cities a shot. Who knows, maybe the band I'm in will work out well and we'll all transfer there.

My name's Wesley. I'm in a band called [cussword] and there's never an easy way to describe it. We play pretty, strange, chaotic, melodic music that's simple and complex all at the same time. One guy plays cello, drums, and guitar and is a member of the Memphis symphony. One guy plays lap steel, guitar, and piano sometimes. I play organ, harmonica, jaw harp, records, samples, and write the words that we have right now(mostly instrumental). So if you can imagine a Mogwai-esque band. The closest thing I've heard like us is The Books. Sounds lame to try and describe your band when it's like that I guess but it is and just consider us a punk band. Even though it's rather slow.
