Church today seems to be right out.

Sonya and I were at a a friend's house for a party for one of the friend's friends; it was an Americana party, with many of us dressing as stereotypes. Sonya relied on her Hispanic heritage. I looked like a laid-back ranch-kid. One guy, a Japanese national, dressed as a thug, complete with sagging pants and off-center hat.

It was a good time, and one from which I recovered, if not before oversleeping.

In any event, I have been generally pleased with this past week. I managed to get a fair amount of my prospectus drafted; at this point, I need only lay out the chapter and section headings and send it off to my committee. I also got my syllabi drafted, so that when work starts for me on Thursday, I will be ready to go.

As regards that, I have decided that I was entirely too lenient on my students over the summer, so much so that I did them a disservice. Certainly, I did not push them as hard as I usually drive students, and I think it showed in their work. This term, therefore, I am returning to the manner of teaching I employed at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette; students may have hated the amount of work and the fact that I would tell them when they were wrong that they were wrong, but they got a handle on the material, and that is the point of the work.

We'll see how it works this time around.
