Last night was amazing; Against Me!, the Bloodbrothers, and Lucero all performed batshitfuckingmazing sets, and we rocked like tomorrow wasn't coming with old friends and new. However, a few folks in the audience needed some helpful tips for their next concert experience, so for the welfare of the general public and my own edification here are

WAYS TO AVOID GETTING INTO A FISTFIGHT WITH ME AT A SHOW

1. Look, amateur music photojournalism is fine and dandy, and I like seeing blurry photos of punkrockahs as much as the next internet slave. But if you're being jostled by the crowd, don't get pissed off at me for bumping into you. If you can't handle it, get out of the fucking pit. Don't start a fight with my friends.

2. No cigarettes on the dance floor unless you have masterful coordination.

Despite being threatened by a bunch of photo-cellphone-wielding sixteen year olds who didn't know the words to a single song by any of the bands and getting a fucking nasty cigarette burn right in the middle of my tattoo, I managed to keep my temper under control and avoid confrontation. Because real badass motherfuckers don't start fights. They finish them. And that's why there's no rules past two.

Be good to folks. Your selfishness and self-righteousness may keep other people from having a good time.

And that shit just ain't punk rock.

I once thought about writing a book detailing the intense mind/body connection required to wield a lit cigarette in a crowded room. I can say with pure honesty that I have mastered this with only minor damage to the skin on my palms. A Nicotine Ninja is not without his scars from training.

Back before it was even called a mosh pit, it was de riguer to have a smoke, a drink or both when pogoing like a pinhead. Even as recently as 2000, I was at a concert in Freiburg and it was almost expected of you to throw yerself bodily into the crowd with durrie in one hand and plastic cup of cheap beer in the other. Only losers spilled their drinks or burnt anything with their smokes. Kids these days don't have the right coordination for it. Sure they're good at other things but it ain't real punk, no more. wink
