'Gangs Of New York':
What exactly have the lazy critics who branded this movie 'fair-to-middling' been watching. It certainly wasn't this.
For this is a masterpiece.
Once, every decade, Martin Scorsese makes a movie that reminds everyone why he is forever being hailed as The Greatest Living Film Director, and this is this decades entry.
The entire opening sequence of the young Amsterdam Vallon being led by his father through the grimey underworld of his gang The Dead Rabbits as they prepare for battle, right through to that first major confrontation, and it's tragic conclusion, is worth the price of admission alone.
The fact that the film then rests upon the shoulders of Lamentable De Caprio could have been a huge problem, were it not for the astonishing performance of Daniel Day-Lewis; and excellent support from John C Reilly and Colm Meany.
Everything about this movie reeks of quality, but Daniel Day-Lewis is in a field of his own. I've rarely seen such a mesmerising performance, as he humanises such a biggoted and sociopathic monster.
He must win an oscar for this. He simply must.
I cannot recommend this film highly enough. As I emerged punch-drunk from the cinema after 2hrs 50mins, I could easilly have gone straight back in and watched it all over again.
You must see it.

I see you like Arab Strap. Are you into other Scottish bands like Dawn Of The Replicants, Mogwai and Delgados?
