Hapkido is a Korean martial art related to Aikido, Tae Kwon Do, and Jujitsu. It's relatively rare in the USA. It's passive, like Aikido...using your oponents energy against them. But we also have the whole aggressive Tae Kwon Do element. We grapple too, with the Jujitsu element. Lots of hand techniques designed for me to have an oponent on their face in 30 seconds or less.
We CAN injure, but are not allowed to kill anybody, unless it's absolutely neccessary. In all our knife defenses, we are trained to subdue, disarm, then INJURE the attacker. Meaning, slash an arm or something, but never the throat.
Our Sabumnim's explaination is that if/when the cops show up, they'll be one person on the ground dead, and me holding the knife...looks bad...y'know? So, it's not that we physically can't, it's just not supposed to be our goal.

Ah, pet peeves, my favorite!!!
1. People who wear sunglasses inside. I haven't seen this that much since moving to Texas...but in NY...people wear their sunglasses on the subway all the time and I just want to fucking smack them. Unless they're hung-over and making the walk of shame...that's different.
2. Women who don't know how to walk in heels but insist on wearing them anyway. Seriously folks...if you're walking in a pair of heels, that makes you look like you've got a pole stuck up your ass...not sexy. Take the time to learn and practice.
3. People who don't say please or thank-you. That ones pretty self-explanitory...
And for the record: In NY...if the police are called to a domestic situation...it's up to the woman (or man...depending on who the victim is) if they want to press charges. UNLESS the victim is sporting some kind of actual visible injury. Bruising, bleeding, swelling, that kind of thing. THEN, it's an automatic arrest and the state/city will press charges for you, regardless of what you want.

Enjoyed reading your journal. It reminds me why I'm here. I was a domestic violence counselor in NYC...and you're right, people suck, the system sucks, and I had to get my ass out of there. I got tired of fixing people and yeah, decided to fix cars instead. So now I'm in school at Universal Technical Institute.
Being a domestic violence counselor, I had to deal with the police a lot, and seriously, that's not a job I envy out there. You guys have it rough.
