My friend Xray is an Associate Member at the Magic Castle, and I am subletting a flat right next door to it, so I've been able to meet Xray a few times now when he goes. If you've never been there, it's quite a fun night. 3-4 rooms of magic, with staggered performances so you can catch them all. Men wear jackets and ties, ladies wear dresses/skirts. There is a restaurant, but I hear the food leaves a lot to be desired.
My favorite has been the close-up room, only 20 seats, with 2 different performers (early and late). Last night, the early guy from Germany sucked, but the later performer was Johnny "Ace" Palmer, and he's the best I've ever seen. Even when you knew the mechanics of what he was doing, you couldn't see him doing it.
In the main stage, Dana Daniels was performing a Vaudeville style Variety Show. Great comedy patter, good if simple magic, very entertaining.
