Well what to say about recent events that the rest of the world hasn't already heard. Christchurch has been devastated by a large earthquake at this stage it was measured at magnitude 6.3 at an extremely shallow depth of about 5km. It produced the most violent ground shaking in New Zealand measured at 1.8 to 2.2 times the force of gravity.
There are plenty of sites that have quake maps that show the location and magnitude of the quake and the aftershocks but I think the following link gives a good comparison of some of the damage.

I have friends and family in Christchurch as many people do and I'm lucky that they have all been accounted for and are safe and well.
Thoughts go out to the residents of Christchurch and admiration to all those who are helping including the many hundreds of people from overseas in the Search and Rescue teams, Army, Navy and Police.
