Re: new Seuss projects. I grew up with the old, I like the old. I think Mike Myers did some great movies (yeah, even Wayne's World 2) 'til he got caught up in the mediocrity of Austin Powers. I was considering going to The Grinch, despite a general Carrey-dislike, as a thing to do with my ex, but since she went before we had a chance I said ah, forget it. Hmm. I think Romanek was going for an explanation; as you said, to explain how he got to where he was. For a movie that was as nuanced as it was, that struck me as out of place. I just thought it would've worked better without any real explanation; Sy is just a creepy guy who, perhaps out of lonliness, became so emotionally involved in this family that he was unable to deal with a fracture in the perfection he imagined their lives to be. That struck me as sadly human. Compound the buying of a picture to pass off as his mother's, and the audience is left wondering and can view Sy's problems as complex. By laying the abuse out like that...I don't know...it seemed, as I said, clumbsy. I'm rambling. Mea culpa.
