SG Has been Eating my posts lately. (or i've been really clumsy with their construction) This has GOT to stop. Really. Ok, almost the entire post, rebulit.

The 1562 Map of America by Diego Gutirrez
Created as a large scale ceremonial style map just before the founding of St. Augustine, This map identifies geographical elements of the Americas unseen in prior maps, and it details the Spanish holdings in America. (Note there is no line of demarcation. Only the Tropic of Cancer is notated.) ["This hypothetical vertical line (line of demarcation) in the Atlantic Ocean served as the division between Spanish and Portuguese possessions in America. West of the line were Spain's areas of influence."]

Link to Article at Library of Congress - article detailing the map's importance more articulately than I. It's also the internet based location.

- This site allows you to magnify and explore the map. Link to Map Explorer!!!!! (click the map on the page!!!)

Early Reference to California

Sea Creatures in the North Atlantic

It should also be noted that though this is the largest and most detailed map of the Americas before the eighteenth century, there are only two known copies of this map in the world, One residing in the Library of Congress, the other in The British Library in London. Any other copies in existence are completely unknown.
