Hurricanes.
to imagine what one would be like, think of a thunderstorm... now imagine the WORST thunderstorm you've ever been in. Now imagine the wind so strong that the tree in front of you is nearly bent to the ground, and the rain pelting down is comming in sideways. The sky is black, and the sounds! Imagine howling and train sounds, your house shaking from the force, the wind. There are flashes of light in the sky from lightening strikes, and intense pressure in your head. Hurricanes are usually preceded by tornadoes, so toss some of them in as well at the onset.
I was in Andrew in '92 when it came ashore in florida. I was Back in florida for the 2005 hurricane season, in which, Wilma , Rita,
Katrina, Tammy and several more either crossed the state or gave us a scare, when they all arrived back to back to back in 2005.

(The katrina link has a REALLY cool map- note the width of the storms around the eye.)

Anyways, I feel for those who have gone through massive devastation,
Hurricane Dean is going on right now in Mexico, and the Caribbean has already been pelted by it.
I will say this though, one of my favorite memories comes from the devastation of a hurricane....
It's of Ft Lauderdale, the day after Katrina, (or was it Wilma?) There was no power and no one had figured out how to turn on the generators yet. There was no one on the road, no one out playing music or shooting or shouting at each other.
It was SO quiet.
You could see the stars in downtown Ft. Lauderdale.
for one night.
There will never be anything like that again, i am sure.
