Teaching is drawing out: Thats the root meaning of education. Teachers are guides, midwives, coaches who help students recognize that they know more than they think they know.

Writing coaxes ideas and perceptions from the subconscious (the engine and fuel tank of the mind) and ties them to the page with lines of words.

To draw is to seenot merely look at, but see: to slow down, to let the hand and the eye reveal to the mind and the heart the nature of the visual world.

To photograph is to portrayanother word whose roots mean to draw out. In this sense, all of my photographs are portraits, whether the subject is a person, a tree, or a gate.

I concentrate on process and let the product take care of itself. I dont know or care much about the technical side of photography. I work intuitively, I improvise, I play. "
