This year has been interesting for the most part.
A lot of bad things have happened with my family in the past few months.
The most recent was with my Grandpa Norm(my dad's dad). He's been pretty sick of late and I found out on Wednesday that his leg was getting cut off below the knee. That was supposed to happen today. But it didn't. My dad called me this morning and I ignored him. Then my cousin Norm called me at about 5. He just wanted to let me know that Grandpa was in the hospital. His kidneys gave out. His bed side nurse said that on a scale of one to ten, ten being the worst, he was a high nine or a low ten. About an hour ago my older sister called me to let me know that he was in a coma and that his doctors were performing CPR. My grandmother refuses to let them do it more then once. Which is the best thing in this situation. He's dying. I am not really sure how I feel about it. I remember him from when I was little. He always called people Maynard and his pockets always held lifesavers. He was funny and so big and strong. I was proud that he was my family. He was a hero who went to Vietnam three different times. He was brave and strong and worked hard to give not only his children but then more then one of his grandchildren everything they needed.

When I saw him at Christmas it made me sad. I was shocked to see the strong man of my early childhood looking weak and old. The fact is, he is old. My faith gives me the luxury of knowing that because he was and is a warrior that he has a better future in heaven. I know that Odin is waiting to take him to Valhalla where he has earned a place. The warrior that was always there under the surface just watching will be welcomed with open arms by his brothers and his people. I get my Norwegian blood from him. If he belongs with anyone its with the Gods and defenders of our ancestors.

I love you grandpa. If you go tonight, please know that I will always remember you as the funny man with the lifesavers in his pocket that pretended my name was Maynard.
