Yesterday when I got back from contra, Sacha and Josh and Clifton and Clint and I were all talking in the living room. Josh told me they had been talking about me earlier (wha???) and then he told me how much he liked my poetry. He thought I was a really good poet. And I felt kind of flabbergasted.

It's been a long time since I've received a compliment from someone I truly respect. Josh didn't make the best first impression with me, but after getting to know him my attitude towards him did quite a turnaround. He's one of the few people I admire and respect, for many reasons. And I could take his compliment completely to heart, because I know (and this is sort of a fucked up way to think about it, but it happens) he doesn't really want anything from me.

A lot of the time people will give you a compliment not just because they believe what they say, but because they want something from you. Even if it's just to make you think slightly better of them (which is fairly harmless) or sometimes to flatter you (which isn't). But I know Josh was just speaking his mind - that's what he really thought. And it really touched me. I kind of had a "shuffle-my-feet-aw-shucks" moment. It totally made my day.
