I love this new album : Anthony Joseph and the Spasm Band
This wire of head of bird is well far from having of it the stupid brain (of a bird, not of his/her father) and before arriving on our grounds of France with this album, the boy does not have badly to knock about the world in addition to handle. Arrived at London at beginning of the year 90 after having left his native soil of Trinidad, Anthony Joseph is indeed the author of a preceding album but also of collections of poetries and of a novel, never yet translated in our language for the moment but whose success in England is not to prove.
Thus, Anthony Joseph arrives at this beginning of year with this Bird Head Its, homage to his father thus called with Trinidad. And if the title of this disc pays homage to his/her father, it is not a chance because this one as well as the remainder of its family, in particular her large parents, are undoubtedly for much in the music of Anthony as he explains it in the interview, to have assiduously attended the local religious ceremonies.
And of the gospel and the voodoo, Anthony Joseph kept of it energy and faculty to transcend the listener. The name of its group is in this innocent very safe direction since it extremely precisely names The Spasmband. A whole program.
Bird Head Its is indeed a kind of gospel rock'n'roll, fact of funk, of folk, the punk one, jazz and sonorities carabennes. Astonishing mixture at first sight but which appears on the contrary clashing by making a success of the mixture of the kinds and the colors with class.
The voice of superb Anthony Joseph and imperial development by impeccable musicians will take us along campaign of Trinidad to the New-Yorkaise urbanization while passing by old Europe with delight. One often thinks of Galliano, another group English of last century (I adore to make schmuck) led to the rod by Mick Talbot.
One finds there the same ultra-communicative endiabls rates/rhythms, the mixture of improbable styles, same energy and, would dare I to say, the same charisma and emanating shamanism not only of the singer but of all the group.
Let us add to that the guitar of Keziah Jones which comes to titillate our ears on some titles in a true-false improvisation (one intends Anthony Joseph to announce the part of guitar).
Bird Head Its is an immediate disc as much as deep, spiritual and jouissif. A modern gospel, dfitivement. The class and the snap!
