I saw Fiddler on the Roof with Alfred Molina tonight. I was both moved and disheartened by the performance and my inability to shout: "I know who Spider-Man is, Doc! I know!"
A foursome of French folks at the show seemed to love the shit out of me. They kept looking at me and smiling, nodding. After having checked my fly, I could only assume that it was the fact I had a beard that had them all gushing. I think they thought I was the "real" Tevye or maybe a young Santa. Either that, or they were mocking me in French. That's it isn't it? They were mocking me.
I hate them now.
I know the show is getting a lot of flack for not being "Jewish" enough, but I don't get it. The show is, in and of itself, Jewish. I think the naysayers are more in love with the traditional, boisterous version of Tevye that Topol presented, but Molina held his ground without any discernable accent or affectation. His performance was subdued and very real. The set pieces were minimal and their use ingenious, at times.
I hate all other musicals (save Return to the Forbidden Planet and Man of La Mancha... maybe Avenue Q... Little Shop of Horrors...)
Crap. For someone who hates musicals, I like a good chunk of 'em.
Well, at least I hate Rent.

And I am feeling better, thanks.
Also, they have more thank comic book classes...it's a major. It's what I'm majoring in, and it's my last quarter.
P.S. -- I still have your pilot, and I shall read it as soon as I fuckin' graduate.
